Perú is the ideal destination for adventure seekers, with plenty to learn, explore and discover outdoors — from the most beautiful landscapes such as Rainbow Mountain or the turquoise Humantay Lake, to Machu Picchu, a wonder of the world. This must-see South American country is home to ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the city of Cusco.

Peru Study Abroad offers very unique, ethically-run service-learning programs in Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas for students and faculty from all over the world. These programs are open to all students irrespective of their level of Spanish proficiency, and help them improve their Spanish while they serve.

Housing

Where you’ll live.

Homestay: Single or shared room, two meals per day and weekly laundry service.

Students house: Single bedroom with shared kitchen and living area, in Cusco or Calca (Sacred Valley).

Rural & public schools

Peru’s education system still struggles, especially in rural areas where geography and distance are the main challenges. Placements are in public schools, after-school programs and centers in Huillcapata (Cusco) and Saccllo (Sacred Valley): assist teachers, help lead English classes, mentor students, organize sports and educational games, and help with homework.

Medical

Rural hospitals & clinics

With only two public hospitals in Cusco, good healthcare coverage across the region is impossible; private hospitals and NGOs are vital. Support doctors and nurses, help patients and assist in administrative areas — while learning how Andean healing traditions coexist with modern medicine.

Center for children with disabilities

These private organizations offer comprehensive services for children and young people with disabilities in Cusco. Support the children, assist with feeding and skills exercises, take the kids around the outdoor gardens, and help in the laundry and the kitchen.

Youth development & protection organizations

Local organizations provide housing and a safe environment where high-risk youth improve their self-esteem and gain important life skills. Facilitate games, help with homework, organize recreational afternoons and an after-class English program — English skills can open doors in one of Latin America’s top tourist destinations.

Culture

Animal care & cultural preservation center

Care for llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos — historically vital to Peruvian culture — while supporting the preservation of traditional Incan spinning, dyeing and weaving. Assist with tours and weaving workshops, and help local weavers improve their English and selling techniques.
